The entrance to Kings Canyon National Park from CA180.
(5100 miles driven)
We got a late start today leaving the hotel at 8:51am looking for some fried chicken for a picnic in the Sequoia National Park. After securing our picnic supplies we headed east on CA180 to the entrance to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. We then headed south on CA198 visiting the largest living thing on earth the Sherman Tree. It was then time for our picnic. The picnic area was closed so we had to park the car and walked into the area. It was very private and everything was going fine until I told Marlene I had seen a bear back at the Sherman Tree. After that she would take a bite and look for bears. Needless to say the picnic was cut short. We then left the park on a very winding CA198 south picking up a very crowded CA99 south at Visalia, CA. Deciding to get off CA99 and let the traffic subside we stopped at Buck Owens's Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, CA for a drink and dinner at 5:30pm. There is way too much traffic and dust in California!
