Marlene at the summit of Sherman Hill, WY the highest point on the transcontinental road and railroad. It was very foggy when we arrived but had started clearing before we left.
(4764 miles driven) On the road at 9:05am and drove by the Wyoming territorial prison which is claimed to be the only know prison to hold Butch Cassidy. We then headed for Cheyenne, WY which was the division point and main maintenance location for the Union Pacific's Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam engines. After visiting the museum and driving to the park where one of the Big Boys was on display, we headed for Nebraska. We stopped at Sidney, NE (the corporate headquarters of Cabela's) for lunch. Then it was on to North Platte, NE (the home of the largest classification yard in North America, Bailey Yard) to an observation tower that overlooks the yard. This observation tower was listed in AAA and all of the literature we got on North Platte. After driving around North Platte for one half hour Marlene finally asked someone in a pickup truck where it was. The reply, they haven't built it yet. We then continued east. Seeing a sign for an original Pony Express station we were reluctant to stop just in case they had not built it yet. We stopped in Kearney, NE at 7:05pm.
