2007 Cross Country Car Trip - Wednesday September 5th

(3709 miles driven) We were on the road at 8:58am. After a quick stop at the Berkeley open pit mine in Butte, MT we headed for Gardiner, MT at the North entrance of Yellowstone Park. We toured Mammoth Hot Springs and then headed for the hotel in Gardiner, MT stopping at 4:44pm. Today started overcasted and ended with rain.

This is a view of the Berkeley mine. That water is 1,200 feet deep. Once they stopped the pumps in the shaft mines in town, the by then abandoned pit started flooding and is currently rising at the rate of 12 feet per year. The Berkeley mine was started in 1955 to mine the low grade copper ore when the high grade copper ore started playing out in the shaft mines.
